The Muddy Waters ride is technically not a race, but it can move to that level quite easily. For the last several years some FOG members have attempted to try to ride as a group at a more controlled pace. Spread out amongst several hundred riders that's more easily said than done, but this year there is a more defined plan which promises a greater chance of success.

This message from George:
FOG members interested in a "controlled" pace Muddy Waters century are invited to join a "Classic" group oriented ride. The understandings would be as follows:
-Goal is a 5 hour century. That's a 32 kph average pace. Stronger riders are invited to pull longer and or ride the wind side but not to push the pace. The whole group will be faster this way.
-No stopping for mechanicals or flats. Sorry. Please ensure your bike is as ready as you are
-One pee stop around lockport then no stops till Bird's Hill
-We will ride Big Bridge and Sapton together
-We will ride out initially with the big group, then come to a FULL STOP on River Road just after we turn off River Road (before Larters). We will wait for anyone who may have been dropped.
-George and Howard are glad to coordinate but things will work best if everyone takes responsibility for the group.

It's too bad we didn't actually stick to the game plan. "Average speed of 32km" somehow translated into "this is the FOG classic group so we're riding 36-38km" even though the distance and heat warranted more restraint. I guess the wires got crossed somewhere. Suffice to say the group was shattered before BHP. It's unfortunate as the ride could have been fun.
