A message from Judy:
First of all I want to thank everyone for all their best wishes and prayers. I have been inundated with phone calls and emails! I especially want to thank Dave F. for his assistance at the accident scene. It sounds like it was a pretty awful accident to see. We found out later that the artery in Gary's cheek had been cut which explains why there was so much bleeding. Gary is doing pretty well, all things considered, and looks better every day. He is still on oxygen and has a lot of pain when he moves. For those of you that I haven't spoken to here is a summary of his injuries....... broken nose, four broken ribs, partially collapsed lung and three broken vertebrae (T9,11 and 12). Oh yes.....and about fifty stitches in his face (fortunately done by a plastic surgeon). At first it looked like he would have surgery on his back but we saw the surgeon yesterday and he does not want to operate (that's a good thing!). If it were just the three broken vertebrae it would be a simple operation with a small plate but unfortunately there are cracks and chips the length of his back and the surgeon would need to put in a huge plate and pins to repair them all resulting in a big loss of mobility. The alternative is a brace which he will wear for the next three months and then he will start rehab. It will be a long process. The surgeon told us it would take a year for a full recovery. He will be in the hospital for a few weeks at least and can certainly have visitors (we have already seen some of you!). Right now he is still in stepdown in the trauma ward at HSC on the third floor (GD-3). Visiting hours are from 11 until 2:30 and 4 until 8. Once again, thank you.
Sincerely,
Judy
