23 Days Of Italia - Day 21

Today's stage finishes at the ski resort of Cervinia in Piedmont. Piemonte is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, two of the great classic reds of the world along with Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rioja. The predominant red grape of Barolo and Barbaresco is nebbiolo. Whereas the cabernet sauvignon of Bordeaux seems to grow almost everywhere, the pinot noir of Burgundy is much more difficult to grow, performing best in the cool climates of Burgundy, Champagne, and the Pacific Northwest. Nebbiolo is capable of making complex wines that will age for decades, but for some reason only really excels in the Piemonte region of Italy.
