23 Days Of Italia - Day 5

Stage 5 is a day for the GC contenders: Contador, Porte, Aru. Contador is the only previous winner of the three, having won in 2008. Somewhat bizarrely he would win in 2011, still racing while his case dragged on while he was investigated for his clenbuterol positive. He was eventually suspended and the 'win' taken away. Contador is looking for the Giro - Tour double. Coppi was the first to achieve the feat, doing so in 1952. Three men share the honours of most Giro d'Italia GC wins with five a piece; Alfredo Binda in the 20's, Fausto Coppi in the 40's and 50's, and Eddy Merckx in the late 60's early 70's. Binda would win an incredible 12 of the 15 stages in 1927.
